15HOW TO HOLD THE FOCUS PADS – AND HOW NOT TO!

The work you do on the focus pads will depend on your experience. If you have never boxed yourself, and this is all new to you, don’t try to run before you can walk. By following the advice given in the first two parts of this book, you will have first learned how to deliver and then to teach a jab, followed by a cross/back hand and so on, progressively and simultaneously developing your boxing techniques and teaching ability. Do the same for the focus pads. Be logical.

THE GOLDEN RULE OF FOCUS PAD WORK!

Learn first how to receive a jab and a cross/back hand from clients working out of both the orthodox and the southpaw stance. Remember that you must adopt the same stance as them, and don’t be tempted to put off working out of your non-preferred stance. The sooner you make yourself do it, however awkward, the sooner it will become second nature and you will be able easily to switch between stances without even thinking about it. That day will come: be patient and work hard at it.

The basic principle of pad work is actually very simple. You are standing opposite your client, both of you face to face, in the same stance. Here is the golden rule:

If you are both standing orthodox, the client will jab with their left hand and you will receive their jab with your left focus pad. Their cross/back hand will come from their right glove to your right focus pad.

If you are both standing southpaw, the client will jab with their right hand and you will receive their jab with your right focus pad. Their cross/back hand will come from their left glove to your left focus pad.
